Umtha Welanga - 'A New Dawn'

Umtha Welanga - 'A New Dawn'

According to UNICEF there were 3.4 million orphans in SA in 2009; almost 2 million of these have lost one or both parents to AIDS. http://www.childinfo.org/hiv_aids_orphanestimates.php
It is easy to be overwhelmed by figures like these. And yet some people are inspired by them to respond. Like Vivienne Mciteka, founder of Umtha Welanga.

Umtha Welanga is a small community organisation which offers a loving future to orphans in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Since 2000 they have enabled hundreds of marginalised children to move into long-term foster care. They prepare families for fostering and support them through the process.
Other services provided include support for child-headed households; an after-care programme for pupils; HIV-prevention and its management in those who are infected; income generation; home-based care for the terminally ill; and an advice office.

God of Orphans,
What compassion you must feel for your children on the margins; the forgotten ones threatened by AIDS.
You must ache for them as they grieve for parents taken away;
as they become "parents" for younger siblings.
A child's cry must break your heart.
Let us not be deaf to them in the midst of our comfort.
God of orphans, hold your children close.
Amen.
