Welcome

You came
into our lives
as sudden
as a cat, (and as small),
and I welcome you
on behalf of us all
gathered here,
as we do a newcomer, or
guest,
but hesitate, thinking:
we welcome those
we offer some good thing,
or warm home,
or comradeship,
or celebration of note,
whereas our wide arms,
well used hearts,
rough city,
scabby world,
are all nothing
to what you offer,
and it is we who bow
and touch our caps
and clasp our hands
as guests to
your
munificence.
Yet welcome you I will,
for dewy fragrance
petal newness
so untainted
our hearts unfurl
like buds themselves,
for the marks you bear
of the perfect world
of your origin
that are so powerful
we are quite overcome.
