Mary of Nazareth by Peter Krummeck

Mary of Nazareth by Peter Krummeck

Almighty God,
We give thanks to you for the life and faith
of your beloved servant, Mary,
who has come to represent a concept of motherhood
that both embodies and transcends all time,
all languages and all religions;
We give thanks that you chose her
to be the mother of your son
in order that we should know and learn
to love Jesus as a human being.

Almighty God,
Remind us of the unfounded accusations
and irredeemable damnation that Mary faced:
Remind us that the title ‘Mary of Nazareth’
robbed her of her married status and branded her a whore;
Remind us that Mary was a refugee;
Remind us that Mary
As a woman in the context of her religion
And the patriarchal laws those times imposed
Was voiceless to vote and powerless in recourse to law;

Have mercy on our world
that yet wraps itself in practices of bloody hatred,
starving greed and endless vengeance;
Empower us, as you did Mary, to fulfill your promise;
Kindle in us her humility
to know your truth and reject prejudice;
Strengthen in us her determination
to do your will and avoid duplicity.
Confirm in us her willing desire
to bear your loving son within our own bodies.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus,
in whose name we pray.
