Friends of Child Protection

Friends of Child Protection was founded in 2002 by a group of Christian woman led by Kerrin Marcon and her Mum Flo Borchers, who felt compelled to do something after hearing about the alleged gang-rape of a 9-month-old baby. Researching the issue further, they came to realise the magnitude and severity of child abuse in South Africa and decided to take action.

A team of women based in Cape Town now co-ordinate activities and administer funds that are raised by a team of women in Tokyo and London. All the members of this organisation work on a voluntary basis juggling jobs, spouses and children. Several women from RUC volunteer each month to pack Comfort Packs and Food Parcels.

As many as 500 Comfort Packs are put together per month and given directly to abused children by Investigating Officers at police stations. The packs are age and gender appropriate and include basic necessities such as underwear and toiletries. They also contain items to soothe and comfort the children such as bubbles and soft toys. For many, these Comfort Packs are the first new items they have ever received, and often the first items that belong entirely to them.

The team also provide parcels of staple foods to victims and their families. Many families struggle to feed themselves due to their everyday economic circumstances, and families are often left destitute if the child-abuse perpetrator is also the breadwinner.
